Gomukh is mentioned in the Puranas. It is said there that, searching a lost sheep, a boy reached near a glacier in Gangotri, the snout of which exactly looked like the face of a Cow, and thus it got its name 'Gomukh' .
The name Gaumukh can be broken down into Gau, which means cow, and Mukh, which means mouth. The Gangotri glacier’s terminus is shaped like a cow’s mouth, hence the name Gaumukh. Gangotri – Chirbasa – Gila Pahar – Bhujbasa – Gomukh is the trek route from Gangotri to Gaumukh. The 18-kilometer trek is usually completed in two days. Gaumukh has no accommodations.
