Gomukh is mentioned in the Puranas. It is said there that, searching a lost sheep, a boy reached near a glacier in Gangotri, the snout of which exactly looked like the face of a Cow, and thus it got its name 'Gomukh'. Gaumukh is only open from May to October and is closed the rest of the year.

The name Gaumukh can be broken down into Gau, which means cow, and Mukh, which means mouth. The Gangotri glacier’s terminus is shaped like a cow’s mouth, hence the name Gaumukh. Gangotri – Chirbasa – Gila Pahar – Bhujbasa – Gomukh is the trek route from Gangotri to Gaumukh. The 18-kilometer trek is usually completed in two days. Gaumukh has no accommodations.

Bhojbasa is the only overnight stop along the route with lodging options. Mid-August to September is the best time to visit Gaumukh. May and October are both cold months.  Avoid the monsoon season, which runs from June to July.
